Which cap takes embroidery best

Four cap shapes lined up on a workshop bench — structured, snapback, trucker and dad cap — each with a stitched mark on the front panel

Most of what decides whether embroidery looks good happens before the machine is switched on. It happens when you pick the cap.

A flat panel is a forgiving panel

Stitching wants a surface that does not move. A structured six-panel cap has a stiffened front held taut in the hoop, and that is why it takes the crispest lettering of anything we sell — small type stays legible, curves stay round, and the fabric does not pucker as the needle works.

An unstructured dad cap is the opposite: soft, washed, and happy to gather. It looks wonderful with a small mark or a short name, and it fights anything dense. If you want a full logo with fine detail, this is not the shape for it.

Watch the centre seam

A six-panel cap has a seam running up the middle of the front. A wide design crossing that seam will sit slightly differently on each side, however carefully it is hooped. Five-panel and flat-fronted camp caps have no centre seam at all, which is why a wide word or a landscape logo belongs on those.

Trucker fronts and 3D work

The foam front of a trucker cap is the traditional home of raised, padded lettering — the foam gives the stitches something to stand on. The mesh back takes nothing at all: it has no body to hold a stitch, so keep designs on the front panels.

Knitwear is a different craft

A beanie stretches, which means the stitching has to be placed where the fabric is most stable. On a cuffed beanie that is the turned-up brim, which is doubled over and behaves almost like a flat panel. On a slouchy or fisherman beanie there is less of that, so initials and short names work where a wide logo will not.

In short

If you are not sure, design it in the editor first. It draws your text at the real size on a photograph of the actual cap, so you can see whether it fits before you order.
